Training Courses

The “Clean Up the Web” Training Program

The following courses are part of the Clean Up the Web Training Program and are offered by Technology Training (http://training.csufresno.edu). Courses cover how to plan a website, how to use the software tools, and how to follow the University Web Standard. There are a total of seven courses. All courses are offered in the Technology Training labs in IT300.

The Clean Up the Web Training Program is a comprehensive course offering for all levels of experience and needs. Unlike Web academies in the past, not all people will need to take all courses in the Clean Up the Web Training Program. The following chart should help people decide which courses best suit their needs.

Course Descriptions

Website Planning and Preparation:

Prerequisite: None

Description: This course covers a methodology for planning and preparing to build a website based on the University Web Standard. Topics include information design (defining sections, menus, pages), strategies for group collaboration, tools to facilitate site organization and group work, and software and personnel needed for productive site development.

Who should take this course: Anyone who will be participating in website creation or redesign, content gathering, or information design, or anyone interested in the University Web Standard.

 

Dreamweaver I:

Prerequisite: Website Planning and Preparation is highly recommended if the University Web Standard will be used in a campus Web project.

Description: This course covers basic Web development using Dreamweaver. Topics include introduction to Dreamweaver, views/layouts, basic HTML, accessibility concerns, designing a page, formatting text and images, creating and using templates, site creation and sending files via FTP to a Web server.

Who should take this course: Anyone who is interested in learning how to use Dreamweaver for creating websites.

 

Dreamweaver II:

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver I is required. Website Planning and Preparation is highly recommended if the University Web Standard will be used for campus Web projects.

Description: This course covers advanced topics in Web development using Dreamweaver. Topics include preferences, Cascading Style Sheets, using library items, accessibility concerns, Fireworks buttons, adding interactive elements, and creating forms.

Who should take this course: Anyone who is interested in learning how to use Dreamweaver for creating websites.

 

University Web Standard I – Site Creation:

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver I & II, Website Planning and Preparation

Description: This course covers how university standard compliant sites must be created. Topics include Web standard file structure, master layouts, editing menus, creating templates, configuring breadcrumbs, building a complete site, development checklist, accessibility concerns, HTML validation.

Who should take this course: Anyone who will be creating websites for the university using the University Web Standard. Attendees must have a strong background in Web development and be comfortable using Dreamweaver.

 

University Web Standard II – CSS Styling:

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver I & II, University Web standard I, Website Planning and Preparation

Description: This course covers CSS styling as it relates to the University Web Standard. Topics include the CSS Box Model, assigning attributes for text and headings, styling buttons and hyperlinks, column colors and backgrounds, styling images, accessibility concerns, and CSS validation.

Who should take this course: Anyone who will be creating websites for the university using the University Web Standard. Attendees must have a strong background in Web development and be comfortable using Dreamweaver.

 

Contribute for Content Editors:

Prerequisite: Website Planning and Preparation

Description: This course covers how to use Contribute to add and maintain Web content. Topics include adding and formatting text, adding pictures, checking out and publishing Web pages, adding hyperlinks, group collaboration.

Who should take this course: Anyone who will be using Contribute to maintain a website or will be responsible for adding new content to a website. People who attend this course do not need a Web design or Web development background.

 

Contribute for Site Administrators:

Prerequisite: Dreamweaver I & II, University Web standard I, University Web Standard II, Website Planning and Preparation, Contribute for Content Editors

Description: This course covers how to maintain and administer a website using Contribute. Topics include; Setting up a site, adding users and roles, user settings, creating connection keys, and general group work strategies.

Who should take this course: People who will be developing and maintaining websites based on the University Web Standard.

Student assistants and off-campus Web developers need to email cleanuptheweb@listserv.csufresno.edu in order to register. Off-campus Web developers will need contract verification from an official Fresno State department or unit by phone in order to register.
